Finally, one of the drawbacks of gaming with a 4K monitor is you really need a beefy video card to run newer games at its native resolution. The only downside a serious gamer might feel is the 4ms response time over a 1ms TN panel, but those extra 3ms didn’t affect my gaming enjoyment in the slightest. I didn’t find the dreaded IPS glow to be noticeable or distracting at all while playing, even in dark interior or night scenes. The IPS panel’s colors look fantastic and vibrant. The picture is sharp and that detail helps when honing in on an enemy in Battlefield 1. And with the 4K resolution, the PPI is higher than my 27-inch monitor (137.68 vs 108.79) even though it’s a larger screen size. But having the few extra inches with the XB321HK really helps fill in my periphery to make it a more immersive experience.

GamingWhen not reviewing a monitor, most of my gaming is done on my own 1440p 27-inch screen. To change these settings I simply had to go into the OSD to tweak things, and it is still just as annoyingly difficult to navigate as on the previous model. For me the brightness setting of 80 is a little high when I’m playing at night (at a brightness level of 100 it is easily over 300 cd/m2). There’s a sRGB mode that will lock adjustments such as gamma at 2.2, brightness at 80, and contrast at 50. There’s a slight oversaturation of blue and cyan, but only marginally so and nothing that will affect your gaming experience.

IGN Review Chris CokeThe colors on the XB321HK are excellent. There is still flickering in some rows, which occurs when a pixel can't change color fast enough, but it’s even better than the Normal results. When the setting is changed to Extreme the response time results rival those of a TN panel. With OverDrive set to Normal (the default setting) the response time test looked great with only modest flickering (zero flickering is the best possible result). Whites are a little crushed, but only affected at the highest 254 value. Gamma is right at 2.2, or just over, with the menu setting at 2.2. TestingThe Acer Predator XB321HK did a fantastic job with the Lagom monitor tests. Since it's an IPS panel you're also stuck with a 60Hz refresh rate, but since it's a 3840 x 2160 panel every GPU except a 1080 Ti wouldn't be able to run most games at a super high framerate anyway. The 4ms response time isn’t quite as fast as a TN panel, but for an IPS it’s outstanding and sufficient for all but the most hardcore fragger. There is some slight IPS glow, but it was only truly noticeable when I was looking for it and never affected my experience negatively. If you can, get a set of desktop speakers or just use your headphones. The screen is an IPS panel so it doesn’t suffer from the viewing angle problems that plague TN panels. They also sound thin and tinny, which is sadly typical with speakers that are built into a monitor. They can get to a decent volume level, but they play out of the back of the monitor so the sound is indirect so you won’t get the exact spatial placement of in-game effects that you’ll get with some desktop speakers or headphones. The XB321HK has two built-in 2W speakers with DTS Sound. The last connection is a 3.5mm audio output for headphones or speakers, although it doesn’t allow for microphone usage with headset. A menu option needs to be selected for fast charging to be enabled. The monitor has a USB 3.0 hub with two ports on the back and two on the left side, which is plenty. For 3840x2160 resolution at 60Hz you need to use DisplayPort (HDMI tops out at 24Hz for the same resolution), which is also required for G-Sync – in addition to a NVIDIA GTX 650 Ti graphics card or better. There is only one HDMI 1.4 and one DisplayPort 1.2 input. Danielle Abraham + 1 moreBack panel connections are fairly limited.
